Learning To Drive - Hazard Perception

The second part of the Theory Test covers Hazard Perception.

This test consists of a series of fourteen video clips of street scenes, each lasting for one minute.

From each scene you are required to identify any "developing hazard", and click the mouse as soon as you spot it.

Although the hazards vary, you might for example be confronted in the distance by children approaching a pedestrian crossing. This is clearly a developing hazard, and you will be awarded between zero and five points by the computer depending upon your reaction time.

There are a total of 75 points available, and the pass mark is currently set at 44 points.

The Hazard Perception section of the test can only be practised on a computer, but we are able to recommend several inexpensive DVDs which are available from many high street stores. These practice discs tend to be of poorer quality than those used by the DSA, but they give you a very good idea of what to expect.

Finally, for those of you haven't worked out that fourteen questions with a maximum score of five only equates to a total of 70 points, be warned:

One of the clips will contain TWO developing hazards, so stay alert!
