Learning To Drive - Theory Test

Passing the Theory Test is the first important step towards obtaining a full drivers licence, and at drivewell  we are always happy to support pupils in achieving this at NO additional charge

There are TWO separate parts to the Theory Test, both of which are taken on the same day:

  The Theory Test

  The Hazard Perception Test

You don't need to have passed these tests to be able to start driving lessons, but the DSA will not allow you to book a Practical Driving Test without a Theory Test pass certificate number.

The Theory Test can be booked online or by calling 0300 200 1122.

On the day of your test:

  • The Theory Test Centre for Milton Keynes is located on the ground floor of Tempus House, 249 Midsummer Boulevard, Milton Keynes MK9 1YA

  • Try to get to the Test Centre at least 15 minutes earlier than your appointment time

  • Take both parts of your provisional licence and your appointment letter with you

  • Turn your mobile off, and be prepared to place all of your belongings (including your mobile) in a lockable cupboard

  • Register with the receptionist, who will tell you how to find your allocated workstation

  • The screen will display your registration details, and you should follow the the on screen instructions carefully

  • The multiple choice section is taken first, and then after a short break this is followed by the Hazard Perception part

  • On completion, you may be asked some survey questions, but these are NOT marked

  • When you have finished, return to reception and collect your belongings and your results
  Good Luck!

  The Theory Test

There are many theory question banks available online, or alternatively they can be purchased in DVD format from computer stores and good bookshops (before purchasing make sure that the questions are from the official DSA question bank, and that it is the latest version).

The DSA provide an online facility for practicing the multiple choice questions - registration costs £6.99 for 30 days.

A good Theory Test question book can be a more thorough way of learning, and drivewell  instructors can provide a copy of specially prepared answer sheets to provide additional help.

There are over 900 questions, from which you will be tested on 50 selected at random, with the pass mark currently set at 43.

At the Test Centre the questions appear on a computer with a 'touch screen'. The instructions are clear, but please ensure that you understand them fully before pressing the START button.

It is possible to skip questions that you are unsure about, and then revisit them at the end. We recommend that you concentrate on answering the questions that you are sure about, and then go back to the more difficult ones in the time that remains.

And at the end of the Theory Test, DON'T FORGET you still have to complete the Hazard Perception section!
