As a visitor to this site, no matter what your age, you should read this section and pass the information to elderly friends and relatives.

Soon, from the age of 70 onwards, the way we handle our continued right to drive is likely to change dramatically.

It must be remembered that many drivers of this age will have been tested over 50 years ago, when driving conditions were very different, and have never been assessed since. Some, when driving tests were suspended during the Suez crises, were issued with a licence without any driving test being attempted.

The government has already put forward several proposals, the most radical of which involves the retesting of all drivers when their licence expires at the age of 70.

Realising the difficulty of testing those who already exceed this age, their first task is to test the more than 1.4 million drivers still holding a licence over the age of 75. In due course the age limit will be reduced to cover those reaching the age of 70.

It is our opinion* that early tests will consist of an eye test, and a Theory Test based on systems already in place for learner, HGV and other specialist licence upgrades.

We find that families worry about elderly relatives who continue to drive in today's hectic conditions. These fears are often unfounded, and a short course will set everyone's mind at rest.

drivewell  driving school is able to offer a short course of driving lessons to help mature drivers in Milton Keynes to resolve any uncertainties in their driving techniques. Following just such a short refresher course, a 75 year old lady recently celebrated her new found confidence by buying herself a brand new car.

The following websites provide assistance to those about to renew their licence at age 70, and of course drivewell  are always happy to offer advice.
